Ductless Mini-Splits

DIY OuttaSight Ceiling Cassette

A ceiling cassette for a room where a wall head would be in the way. Air comes from the ceiling instead.

What you are getting

How it goes in

The head lives in the ceiling

Same pre-charged connection as the wall units, but the indoor piece is a cassette that sits flush in the ceiling. Use it when a wall head would land on art, a window, or a cabinet.

  1. 01Set the headMount the indoor unit on a solid wall, high enough to throw air across the room.
  2. 02Run the lineThe line set is already charged. The fittings close the circuit without a vacuum pump.
  3. 03Power itOnce it is wired and the outdoor unit is set, the system is ready to heat and cool that zone.

The facts that matter

Pressure tested

The pre-charged valve assembly is rated to handle 921 PSI and checked for leaks.

Listed equipment

The valve control is certified under UL 207 and CSA C22.2 No. 140.3. Intertek file 5029931.

R-454B

This generation uses R-454B, the refrigerant these current DIY systems are built around.

No vacuum step

The charge is already in the line set, so the install skips the vacuum and the gauge set.

Why this one

Air from the ceiling, walls left alone

A wall head is the wrong shape for some rooms. Art, windows, cabinets, a bed pushed to the only solid wall. The cassette sits in the ceiling and throws air out across the room, with the same pre-charged connection as the wall kits.

The wall you did not want to give up

If the only place a wall unit fits is above the sofa or across a window, do not force it. The cassette uses the ceiling. The room still gets its own zone, and it still does not need ducts.

Flush, not hanging in the sightline

From the floor you see a square grille, not a box on the wall. It needs a ceiling that can take it: joist direction, a clear path for the line, and enough depth. We look at that before the cassette is ordered, because a beautiful grille in the wrong ceiling is a remodel.

A dinner table that is not under a draft from the wall

Air comes from above and spreads. People sitting around a table are not getting hit from one side. That is why this one shows up in dining rooms and open living spaces more than in narrow bedrooms.

Questions

What changed from the previous DIY generation?

This generation uses R-454B. Earlier DIY systems used R-410A.

Does the box include the wire between the indoor and outdoor units?

A bundled system includes the communication wire so the two pieces can talk to each other.

Can I do this myself?

The line set is made for a homeowner install. How Much? will also mount it, run it, and stand behind the work if you want that.

How many rooms can one outdoor unit cover?

A single-zone system covers one space. Multi-zone condensers in this family support anywhere from 2 to 6 indoor heads, depending on the model.
